Welcome!
Welcome to the 12th U-boat Flotilla U-181. We are glad to have you join us. We are the host site for the 12th U-boat Flotilla, U-181, and U-boat re-enacting group. This site is dedicated to the development and deployment of a historically accurate U- Boat crew of the 12th U-boat Flotilla from 1943 to 1945. We are also the home port of the U-181 U-Boat reenacting crew.
We are lovers of history who have come together to develop a good and historically accurate picture of life as a U-boat crew member from 1943 to 1945. We believe in respecting the veterans of all Great sea wars regardless of the cause or reason of war. We do not support or defend the ideology or political history of the Nazis nor do we wish to glorify the acts and atrocities of war. We only wish to provide a living tribute to the men who served their countries aboard U-boats and Submarines.

The U-boat crews were considered elite units serving in the German Navy (Kriegsmarine). The 12th U-boat Flotilla was based in Bordeaux, France the most southern of all the Bay of Biscay bases. Bordeaux, is not actually located on the Atlantic coast, but is situated some 60 miles inland on the Gironde River. Donitz decided he wanted a bunker facility built there, and that work commenced in September 1941. U-178 was the first U-boat to arrive. It arrived on the 17th. of June 1943 and became the first German boat to dock at Bordeaux. Some 25 Italian Submarines were to be based there as well, and attempts were made to effect cooperation with the German Wolf Packs. Bordeaux was also home to the supply boats, Milche Cow Type XIV submarines, mine layers, and torpedo transports.

The U-181 also called Bordeaux home and from here she made her way across the Atlantic to prey on unsuspecting merchant shipping. WWII was one of the most horrific wars ever waged and we are acutely aware of the horrors of that war. We do not glorify, agree, or in any way condone the acts of the Third Reich. We are not Nazis or a Para military organization. We are lovers of history who want to share our interest in the U-boat war from 1942-1945 from the German side with the public. We do this by attending and sponsoring living history events for the public. After all, this is about respecting veterans from all wars. No single service lost a higher ratio of its men then did the U-boat service of the German Navy during WWII. They lived in a constant state of fear and yet they did their duty. I hope you find the forum and web sight educational and at least entertaining. I hope that you also consider becoming a part of living history by joining us.

Thanks and have Fun!!!
